Trump suspends Russian sanctions for 60 days to facilitate peace talks

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order suspending key sanctions and tariffs against Russia for a 60-day period. The suspension specifically targets measures from the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which had previously mandated significant tariffs on Russian goods and penalties for nations purchasing Russian energy.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the 60-day window is intended to observe whether diplomatic efforts can prevent further war and to evaluate the economic impact of these measures on global and domestic markets. The administration argues that maintaining extreme punitive measures could alienate Moscow from essential peace negotiations regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

The decision is closely linked to a commercial agreement involving the supply of approximately 4.8 million tons of Russian diesel to global markets. This move aims to stabilize energy prices and mitigate fuel costs in the United States ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. While the suspension facilitates the return of Russian diesel shipments to destinations such as Turkey and Brazil, it has drawn sharp criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several bipartisan members of the U.S. Congress, who argue the move rewards Russian aggression.
