US midterm elections see rising mail-in and early voting activity

As the November 3 midterm elections approach, various states are seeing significant activity in voter registration and early voting. In Michigan, mail ballot returns have increased by 30% compared to the same period in 2022. Meanwhile, in Ohio, in-person turnout has been reported as strong, with tens of thousands of voters casting ballots on the first day of early voting.

Legal and political tensions surround voting methods. The U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to allow the Trump administration to implement new restrictions on mail-in voting via the USPS, allowing states to maintain existing systems. Despite previous claims regarding mail-in fraud, Donald Trump has recently encouraged Republicans to utilize early voting and mail-in ballots to secure midterm victories.

Registration deadlines vary significantly by state. In Oklahoma, the deadline is October 9, while Tennessee has already passed its registration window. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, voters have until October 14 to register online or by mail. Concerns also persist regarding potential interference, with reports of calls from some figures to seize election equipment or ballots, though legal experts note the federal government lacks constitutional authority over state election administration.
