Isabel Díaz Ayuso challenges Spanish government on housing and elections
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, has intensified her political opposition to the Spanish central government led by Pedro Sánchez. Following the announcement of general elections for November 29, 2026, Ayuso has criticized the government's democratic principles, comparing the current political climate to Venezuela and accusing the administration of creating a “mafia” in power.
A major point of contention involves the electoral process. Ayuso and Vox leader Santiago Abascal have raised concerns regarding postal voting, prompting the central government to label their rhetoric as “Trumpist.” However, Donald Trump has since clarified that his supporters can use mail-in voting if they wish.
Additionally, Ayuso has threatened legal action against new housing decrees approved by the Council of Ministers. She argues these measures threaten private property, legal certainty, and the free market. She has pledged to use all available legal instruments to defend the constitutional right to property against what she describes as excessive public intervention in the economy.
