Donald Trump extends U.S. trade embargo against Cuba until 2027

U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the economic blockade against Cuba for another year, moving its expiration date to September 14, 2027. The decision, formalized in Presidential Determination 2026-21, utilizes authorities granted by the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917.

The extension maintains the current framework of sanctions, including the Cuban Assets Control Regulations administered by the Department of the Treasury. While the renewal is an annual practice that has been followed by both Democratic and Republican administrations since 1978, it continues to restrict financial operations, trade, and transactions involving the island.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez rejected the decision, describing the policy as “genocidal” and an attempt to “suffocate an entire nation.” The move comes as Cuba faces significant internal challenges, including shortages of food, fuel, and medicine, as well as frequent power outages.
