Donald Trump faces criticism over governance and demands reparations from Iran

Former U.S. intelligence and national security officials are warning that President Donald Trump is adopting governance patterns characteristic of authoritarian leaders. Members of the organization ‘The Steady State’, which includes over 400 former officials, claim the administration is dismantling democratic safeguards by replacing institutional adversaries with loyalists and attempting to control independent agencies like the CIA and federal apparatus to serve personal or electoral interests.

Simultaneously, tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated regarding financial reparations. Following Iran's demand for compensation for damages sustained during recent military conflicts, President Trump announced via Truth Social that the U.S. will firmly demand ‘compensation’ from Tehran. Trump cited attacks against U.S. allies, American troop casualties, and the families of those killed in the USS Cole attack as grounds for these claims. He also suggested reparations should be paid to the families of Iranian anti-government protesters. These conflicting demands complicate negotiations regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran continues to demand an end to hostilities, the lifting of economic sanctions, and the unfreezing of its assets.
