Trump faces foreign policy setbacks ahead of midterm elections

President Donald Trump faces significant diplomatic setbacks and domestic political pressure as he approaches the November midterm elections. His administration's ambitious foreign policy agenda, centered on acting as a global peacemaker, has largely stalled across several major international crises.

In the Middle East, the conflict with Iran has reached a costly standoff. After failing to secure concessions through military pressure, Trump has canceled diplomatic talks and announced a new campaign of economic warfare against Tehran. This stalemate, combined with rising gasoline prices, has contributed to a decline in Trump's approval rating, which currently sits at 33% according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.

Efforts to resolve other conflicts have also seen little progress. Negotiator Jared Kushner recently left talks regarding a Gaza peace deal without an agreement, and a planned visit to Kyiv by Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff to address the war in Ukraine has yet to take place.

Domestically, the Republican Party faces the risk of losing control of Congress if these unresolved international conflicts and their resulting economic impacts continue to affect voters. While the administration noted successes such as the capture of Venezuela's leader, the overall trend is defined by diplomatic stagnation and increasing tension with both adversaries and allies.
