Donald Trump Faces Record-High Threat Level, Prompting Security Fence Plans

A senior U.S. Secret Service official briefed reporters on July 22 that the threat environment for protectees, including former President Donald Trump, is at its highest level ever recorded. The agency has processed roughly 10,000 threat cases this year, a 40% increase over the same period in 2025, and reports a ten‑fold rise in mental‑health commitments for individuals making threats. A 17‑year‑old from Wisconsin was recently accused of plotting an assassination, illustrating the heightened risk.

Amid these concerns, officials have discussed expanding the “ring of steel” around the White House and Lafayette Square. Plans under consideration include a permanent fence extending up to a two‑mile radius, a concept first floated during Trump’s earlier term and revisited following recent attempts on his life. The proposed fencing would affect the White House grounds and the historic Lafayette Square, which has long been a site for public demonstrations.
