Donald Trump faces rural discontent and competitive Senate races
President Donald Trump faces growing dissatisfaction among rural voters ahead of the November midterm elections. An AP-KFF poll from August indicates that 57% of rural voters disapprove of his economic management, a significant shift from his 69% rural vote share in 2024. Farmers report direct negative impacts from tariffs, rising fertilizer and diesel costs, and global energy crises.
This decline in popularity is also impacting Republican performance in key states. In Texas, a traditionally Republican stronghold, the Senate race has become highly competitive. Democrat James Talarico holds a lead in recent polling over Republican candidate and Attorney General Ken Paxton. Trump has visited Texas three times in less than a month to attempt to mobilize his base and protect a seat that has been held by Republicans since 1988. The outcome of these elections will determine control of the House of Representatives and the President's ability to pass his legislative agenda.
