The rescue occurred on July 25 at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, when heavy waves swept the child away. Williams responded to the alert and sprinted toward the water, eventually being assisted by another lifeguard, Aaron Bohnen, to bring both the teen and the child safely to shore. The incident gained national attention after being captured on video by a bystander.

During the meeting in the Oval Office, Trump praised Williams, describing him as a “winner” and noting the importance of lifeguards. The boy's family and local Santa Cruz officials were also in attendance. Williams, who aspires to become a firefighter, emphasized the importance of training and remaining vigilant.
