Donald Trump implements tariff changes and increases campaign spending

President Donald Trump has taken significant actions ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, involving both major campaign expenditures and shifts in trade policy.

Through the Super PAC MAGA Inc., Trump has directed $277 million toward television advertising and direct mail to support Republican candidates in critical races. Federal Election Commission data shows MAGA Inc. has spent over $300 million so far, with plans to spend an additional $400 million to $500 million. Key funding has been allocated to Senate races in Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, including $36 million for Ken Paxton in Texas, $30.1 million for Mike Rogers in Michigan, and over $28 million for Jon Husted in Ohio.

In a separate move, Trump signed an executive order removing a 50% tariff on several Canadian agricultural and forestry products, including plywood, certain paper products, refrigeration equipment, and seaweed. This decision follows requests from Senator Susan Collins to support Maine-based producers of blueberries, potatoes, apples, and seaweed who rely on Canadian imports. To offset these reductions, Trump added several items to the 50% tariff list, such as carpets, paint, shampoo, and air conditioners. The tariff changes are set to take effect on October 30.
