United States increases beef import quota by 300,000 tons
President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation to temporarily increase the import quota for lean beef trimmings by 300,000 metric tons. The measure, effective from September 1 for a 90-day period, aims to lower domestic beef prices by increasing the supply of meat intended for ground beef production.
The quota will be released in three 100,000-ton monthly tranches on a first-come, first-served basis. To prevent unfair advantages for foreign producers, the administration requires that the imported beef be sold at least 25% below current market prices.
The decision comes as the US beef cattle herd reaches its lowest level in 75 years, driven by droughts, wildfires, and restrictions on cattle imports from Mexico. While the move aims to benefit consumers, it has faced strong opposition from domestic agricultural groups like the American Farm Bureau, who argue it will harm US ranchers already facing a market downturn.
The new quota specifically targets countries that do not have their own individual beef quotas, such as Brazil, Paraguay, Ireland, Japan, and the Netherlands. Countries with existing specific quotas or free trade agreements, including Argentina, Uruguay, Australia, and New Zealand, are excluded from this additional volume.
