U.S. Campaign Against ICC Escalates as Rubio Calls Court Illegitimate
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the International Criminal Court as a “frankly illegitimate” organization and said the United States is launching a diplomatic effort to dismantle it. He noted that the United States is not a party to the ICC and warned that American service members and political leaders could face future indictments despite the country’s non‑membership. Since the campaign began, five states – Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Venezuela and Chad – have formally notified the court of their intent to withdraw, and Venezuela has already completed its exit.
The administration frames the push as a defense of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is subject to a 2024 ICC arrest warrant, rather than a shield for President Donald Trump. Trump joked that there is “no information that they’re after me, it could happen,” while reiterating that the effort is aimed at protecting Netanyahu and other officials. Dozens of other countries have joined the U.S. initiative, underscoring a broad international backlash against the court.
