Donald Trump mocks Claudia Sheinbaum's background at South Carolina rally

During a Republican campaign rally in Clemson, South Carolina, U.S. President Donald Trump questioned the professional trajectory of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, remarking, “I don't know how the hell she went from being a ballet dancer to President of Mexico.”

Trump used the comment to recount a disputed anecdote regarding his 2025 decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in U.S. official nomenclature. He claimed that Sheinbaum called him to ask if he was joking about the change, an interaction Trump reenacted by imitating her voice. While he described Sheinbaum as a “beautiful woman” with a “very beautiful voice,” the remarks were viewed as a personal slight during his campaign for the upcoming November 3 midterm elections.

Sheinbaum has previously addressed her history with ballet, noting that she practiced the discipline from age six until her second year of university before choosing to pursue physics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Although Trump has promoted the new name for the gulf, the International Hydrographic Organization has not modified the official international designation of the Gulf of Mexico.
