Donald Trump draws fire over Southern New York U.S. Attorney pick and accusations of political prosecution

President Donald Trump announced the nomination of James McDonald as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, a role with broad autonomy that oversees major criminal cases such as economic crimes, terrorism and corruption. Trump said, “I am confident that Jamie will achieve significant results for our country,” and the appointment will require Senate confirmation.

California Governor Gavin Newsom accused Trump of using the Justice Department to launch a political vendetta against him and his family, alleging a DOJ probe targeting the governor and his wife without any evidence of wrongdoing. Newsom called on Trump to end the personal attack, while the Justice Department declined to comment and the FBI has not yet issued a statement.
