Judge orders Donald Trump to pay $5.8 million to E. Jean Carroll
U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan in Manhattan ordered that nearly $5.8 million—including the original $5 million jury award and accrued interest—be released to writer E. Jean Carroll. The payment follows a 2023 civil verdict that found former President Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Trump’s last effort to block the disbursement was rejected after the U.S. Supreme Court declined on June 29 to hear his petition for review, leaving the judgment in place.
Carroll’s lawyers noted, “It is time for him to pay Carroll,” while Trump’s team argued the funds should remain frozen pending a possible rehearing. A separate $83.3 million defamation judgment against Trump remains under appeal. The order marks the end of the current legal avenue to avoid payment of the $5 million award.
