Donald Trump orders ICE traffic stops to resume after fatal shootings

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social urging Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to continue vehicle stops despite a temporary pause ordered by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin after two fatal shootings. The incidents involved a 26‑year‑old Colombian driver in Biddeford, Maine, and a 52‑year‑old Mexican driver in Houston, Texas. ICE officials said the drivers “weaponised” their vehicles, a claim disputed by witnesses. Mullin’s pause was described by border czar Tom Homan as “not a policy change, it’s a temporary pause” while the agency reviews safety procedures. Trump wrote, “We must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of ICE’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!” and dismissed the suspension as a concession to “radical left” Democrats. The shootings have spurred protests in Maine, Texas and Boston, and prompted investigations by the FBI and DHS. Data show a rise in ICE‑related shootings under the Trump administration, with 14 people shot in six months and at least nine deaths linked to immigration enforcement operations since January 2025.
