Donald Trump orders reduction in US-South Korea military exercises
President Donald Trump has ordered a significant reduction in the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises between the United States and South Korea. The directive was issued shortly before the 11-day drills were set to begin, involving 28,000 U.S. troops.
Trump cited his excellent relationship with Kim Jong-un as a reason for the reduction, describing the exercises as “costly” and an “inappropriate and hostile signal” toward North Korea, which he claimed represents no threat. The South Korean government stated it was not informed of the decision to reduce U.S. participation in the maneuvers prior to the announcement.
