Donald Trump pays $5.6 M to E. Jean Carroll, $83 M defamation judgment pending

Supreme Court filings released this week confirm that former President Donald Trump has paid roughly $5.62 million to E. Jean Carroll after the Court declined to hear his appeal of the earlier civil judgment. The payment settles that portion of the dispute, but a separate $83.3 million defamation judgment issued by a January 2024 jury remains outstanding.

The original 2023 civil trial found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, awarding Carroll $2 million for the abuse claim and $3 million for defamation. Carroll later pursued additional claims under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, leading to the $83.3 million award for continued defamation. Trump’s legal team plans to request the Supreme Court to review the pending judgment, arguing issues of presidential immunity and the scope of official presidential speech.
