Donald Trump pays $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll after abuse verdict

U.S. President Donald Trump was ordered by a federal judge to pay $5.6 million – the original $5 million jury award plus accrued interest – to writer E. Jean Carroll. A New York jury in May 2023 found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation after Carroll, an 82‑year‑old former Elle columnist, said he assaulted her in a department‑store dressing room in 1996. The payment was released after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Trump’s appeal, and Judge Lewis Kaplan authorized the transfer from a court‑controlled account. Carroll announced the receipt with a Substack post titled “The Eagle Has Landed.” Trump continues to contest the judgment and is also appealing a separate 2024 verdict that ordered him to pay $83.3 million for additional defamation claims.
