Donald Trump pledges focus on Ukraine peace at G7 summit, Europe warns of US dominance

At the G7 leaders' meeting in Évian‑les‑Bains, U.S. President Donald Trump praised French President Emmanuel Macron and praised the recent Iran nuclear deal, saying it lowered oil prices and boosted markets. Trump announced that, with Iran resolved, the United States would now concentrate on ending the war in Ukraine. He claimed to have spoken separately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, “I see that maybe we can really do something… they are both open to peace.” Zelensky later said Putin had declined an invitation to meet, adding that a U.S.‑hosted summit might pressure Russia.

European leaders expressed apprehension that Washington could dominate any peace negotiations. French President Macron emphasized the need for a “fair and lasting peace” for Ukraine, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced additional €90 billion in aid for Kyiv and called for Europe’s continued voice in talks. EU officials also noted a divergence from U.S. policy, with Washington easing energy sanctions on Russia while the EU moves to complete a new sanctions package. The differing approaches highlight tension over who will lead future diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
