Donald Trump’s AI‑generated golden eagle on White House balcony sparks controversy

President Donald Trump posted an AI‑generated image on Truth Social showing a massive golden eagle affixed to the Truman Balcony of the White House, captioned “A Golden Gift to the White House for its 250th Birthday Year!” The White House’s official X account later shared the post.

Analysis of the picture revealed it was not a real photograph: metadata indicated it was created with Google AI, and visual inconsistencies (e.g., the balcony railing and a shield bearing 11 stars instead of the traditional 13) confirmed it was fabricated. Freelance photographer Andrew Leyden posted authentic night‑time photos of the balcony that showed no eagle.

The image provoked swift criticism. Commentators noted the 11‑star shield evokes the Confederate States of America, and the eagle’s design resembles the Nazi Reichsadler, leading GOP strategist Steve Schmidt and other observers to call the “gift” grotesque, un‑American, and reminiscent of extremist symbols. The episode added to ongoing scrutiny of Trump’s recent decorative changes to the White House, which have included numerous gold embellishments.
