Donald Trump proposes $5,000 dividend if Republicans win Congress

President Donald Trump has proposed a ‘Trump Dividend’ consisting of a $5,000 payment to every adult U.S. citizen, contingent upon the Republican Party retaining control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate following the November midterm elections.

Estimates suggest the program would cost approximately $1.2 trillion, based on a population of roughly 240 million adults. Legal and budget experts note that such a massive expenditure would require congressional authorization rather than unilateral presidential action. While Trump initially described the payment for ‘every adult American citizen,’ Vice President JD Vance suggested that tariff revenue might fund the initiative and indicated that higher-income Americans might be excluded from eligibility.

The proposal has drawn significant criticism. Democratic leaders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, have characterized the plan as an attempt to buy votes. Economic analysts, such as Marc Goldwein of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, warned that the dividend could cause a significant spike in the national deficit and inflation rates, particularly as the U.S. national debt recently surpassed $40 trillion.
