Donald Trump plans to declare Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory

U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his intention to declare the Strait of Hormuz a United States territory following the defeat of Iran. During recent remarks, including a rally in New York, Trump asserted that the U.S. maintains “total control” over the strategic waterway via naval blockades and claimed that Iran’s military is “totally defeated” while its economy suffers from 300 percent inflation.

Legal and military experts have challenged these assertions. Maritime law specialists, including Jason Chuah and Simon Baughen, noted that under international law and U.S. constitutional requirements, a presidential decree is insufficient for such an annexation; it would likely require the consent of Iran to cede its territorial waters.

Military analyst Pravin Sawhney further argued that the Strait remains under Iranian control and is not subject to unilateral U.S. reclassification. While Trump maintains the blockade is effective and the waterway is open, critics suggest the rhetoric lacks a clear legal or strategic framework for implementation.
