Donald Trump proposes renaming Gulf of Mexico

In January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America,’ arguing that the United States possesses the majority of the coastline in that region.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the proposal, describing it as the ‘notion of someone who ignores history.’ While the name change is being utilized within certain U.S. official agencies for domestic consumption, international organizations, global cartography, maritime treaties, and the United Nations continue to use the universal name, Gulf of Mexico.
