Trump proposes renaming Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ amid trade dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed renaming Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ as tensions escalate in an intensifying trade war with Canada. Trump stated the U.S. is giving ‘serious consideration’ to the change, citing a lack of expected future trade with the province of Ontario.

The dispute follows the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations. The Trump administration has announced plans to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, trucks, and steel beginning January 1, 2027. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced reciprocal tariffs on U.S. imports, including increasing duties on American steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has suggested using all available tools to counter Washington, including potentially restricting the export of electricity and critical minerals to the United States. Additionally, the trade conflict has touched on cultural issues, with Trump denying allegations that the U.S. intended to interfere with the use of the French language in Canada.
