Donald Trump proposes renaming the Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz to the ‘Trump Strait’ during a speech at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. The proposal comes amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, serving as a vital artery for global oil trade. Trump asserted that the United States maintains control over the area, stating, ‘I think we should call the Strait of Hormuz ‘Trump’. It should get something out of this. The Trump Strait.’

The announcement follows recent military escalations, including reports of the U.S. destroying five Iranian tankers following missile attacks on American warships, and retaliatory strikes by Tehran against a U.S. base in Jordan and vessels near the strait. These tensions have contributed to volatility in energy markets, with Brent crude oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel.
