Donald Trump targeted by judicial probe over $1.8 billion Capitol rioter compensation plan

Donald Trump withdrew a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service and secured a settlement that would create a $1.8 billion fund, financed with tax dollars, to compensate dozens of convicted participants in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack who were later pardoned.

U.S. judges have halted the proposal and are examining whether the settlement was based on deceptive practices. Judge Leonie Brinkema blocked the fund, while Judge Kathleen Williams in Miami ordered a review of alleged fraud in the IRS agreement, including claims that the deal would grant Trump’s family and businesses a blanket shield from future tax audits.

Republican lawmakers express discomfort with using taxpayer money to aid the rioters, noting the upcoming 2024 elections and the political risk of defending the payout. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions over the handling of the Capitol riot and the extent of presidential influence over the justice system.
