Donald Trump pursues physical legacy through Washington, D.C. renovations

President Donald Trump is pursuing an extensive physical overhaul of Washington, D.C., aimed at establishing a lasting presidential legacy. In a recent interview, Trump stated, “Nobody will do it once I’m gone,” regarding his efforts to reshape the capital through various construction and renovation projects.

Key initiatives include the proposed construction of a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery. The design, inspired by European monuments like the Arc de Triomphe, would feature gilded elements and the inscription “One Nation Under God.” While officials suggest excavation could begin soon, the project faces legal and regulatory hurdles.

Other administration efforts involve significant landscaping changes across federal properties. Under the “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful” executive order, dozens of mature trees have been removed from the White House grounds and the East Potomac Golf Links. The golf course is being redesigned to host major professional tournaments, such as the U.S. Open, while White House landscaping changes are being implemented to accommodate expanded security and a new ballroom project.
