Donald Trump rejects AI regulation in favor of industry self-control

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will rely on industry self-regulation for artificial intelligence development rather than implementing strict government oversight. Following a meeting with major technology executives in Washington, Trump argued that market incentives and economic self-preservation would provide sufficient safeguards against catastrophic risks while maintaining American competitiveness.

During the summit, leading AI firms signed a voluntary safety framework. This agreement includes internal controls to mitigate risks related to chemical and biological weapons, as well as unauthorized cyberattacks. Signatories include executives from Anthropic, Meta, Google, Nvidia, and Tesla.

The framework also introduces mechanisms for external oversight, allowing observers into facilities and requiring corporate boards to establish independent committees to review safety reports. While currently voluntary, the agreement notes that these measures may eventually be codified into formal legislation.
