Donald Trump Reverses Stance on Ukraine, Backs Zelensky After G7 Talks

Former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst says President Donald Trump has shifted his view of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s prospects, citing recent Ukrainian battlefield successes and Russian setbacks. The change reflects Trump’s preference for “winners” and his belief that strength can secure peace.

At a private G7‑summit meeting, Trump urged Zelensky to adopt a tougher approach toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating he does not believe Putin will act without pressure. U.S. officials reiterated that the president sees force as essential to achieving peace.

Following the talks, the G7 issued a joint declaration reaffirming support for Ukraine and indicating readiness to consider licences for long‑range rockets and air‑defence systems. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Trump’s earlier skepticism and his recent reversal, noting that Trump now respects Ukraine’s resilience.
