Donald Trump plans meeting with Kim Jong Un amid North Korean missile launches
Donald Trump has expressed his intention to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un before the end of the year, following claims that Kim responded positively to a proposal for dialogue. This announcement follows a significant shift in military policy, where the United States and South Korea agreed to reduce the duration of their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises from 11 days to 5 days.
North Korea has rejected this reduction as a gesture of goodwill. Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, stated that the shortened exercises do not change their provocative and aggressive nature. Furthermore, Kim Yo Jong denied knowledge of any recent communications between Trump and her brother, despite Trump’s assertions of a positive connection.
Tensions escalated when North Korea fired approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles into its eastern waters shortly after the decision to reduce the military exercises was announced. South Korean officials condemned the launches as a direct violation of UN sanctions and convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.
