Donald Trump says Ukraine war resolution close ahead of NATO summit

U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that a settlement of the Russia‑Ukraine conflict is "getting closer than people realize" after separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump said "President Putin wants it to end" and added that Zelenskyy "actually wants it to end now," indicating both leaders are willing to negotiate.

The remarks came as the NATO summit convenes in Ankara, Turkey, on 7‑8 July, where Trump is scheduled to meet Zelenskyy and discuss the war. He told reporters the upcoming talks could help bring the conflict to a conclusion, though he offered no concrete breakthrough. Concurrently, Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv killed at least 28 people.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Trump’s position on the war remains consistent and that Putin affirmed his desire to end the fighting. Zelenskyy described his recent conversation with Trump as “very good.” The statements highlight ongoing diplomatic activity but no formal peace agreement has been announced.
