Copenhagen ranked world's happiest city in new global index
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, topped the latest international ranking of the world’s happiest cities. The city’s high score reflects its strong environmental policies, extensive green spaces, and widespread use of bicycles, which together lower air pollution and carbon emissions.
Residents work an average of 37 hours a week, giving priority to family time, leisure and personal wellbeing. Low crime rates, clean streets, reliable public transport and a comprehensive welfare system—including universal health care, free education and gender‑equality measures—also contribute to the city’s quality of life. The Danish lifestyle concept of “hygge,” emphasizing simple pleasures and social connection, is cited as a further factor in the residents’ overall happiness.
The ranking placed Helsinki, Geneva and Uppsala in the following positions, underscoring a broader Nordic trend toward high living standards, social security and sustainable urban planning.
