Trump secures $1.8 billion deal granting IRS immunity

The U.S. Department of Justice announced a deal that shields former President Donald Trump, his adult sons and the Trump Organization from any current or future IRS audits related to tax filings submitted before the agreement. In return for withdrawing a $10 billion lawsuit accusing the IRS of mishandling his confidential returns, the administration created a $1.776 billion “anti‑weaponization fund.” The fund is intended to compensate individuals who claim they were wrongly targeted by the government, although no direct payment will be made to Trump or his family. Critics and tax‑law experts warn that the blanket immunity could set a precedent for political abuse of the tax system. The agreement also includes a formal government apology to Trump and the dismissal of related claims concerning the FBI raid on Mar‑a‑Lago and the 2016 election‑interference investigation.
