Donald Trump seeks new summit with Kim Jong-un amid North Korean missile tests
Donald Trump has expressed his desire to hold a new summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un before the end of the year, attempting to revive the direct diplomacy that characterized his first term.
However, this diplomatic overture has met immediate resistance. Shortly after Trump's announcement, South Korea detected approximately ten short-range ballistic missiles launched from the Pyongyang region toward the eastern waters of the peninsula. In response to the tensions, South Korea's National Security Council convened an emergency meeting.
Further complicating the situation, Trump has requested a reduction in the scale of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises between the US and South Korea. He cited the high cost of the maneuvers and stated they were “hostile” and displeased Kim Jong-un. Pyongyang has previously viewed these exercises as preparations for an offensive.
Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of Kim Jong-un, stated that while the personal relationship between the two leaders remains “excellent,” she was unaware of any recent communications and warned that attempts to use personal ties to force nuclear concessions would be met with “scorn.” North Korea continues to maintain that its nuclear capabilities are an irreversible strategic necessity for its security.
