Donald Trump settles $10 B IRS lawsuit and launches $1.7 B anti‑weaponization fund
President Donald Trump and the U.S. Justice Department reached a settlement in his $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department over the 2020 leak of his, his sons’ and the Trump Organization’s tax returns. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but the agreement includes the creation of a $1.776 billion "anti‑weaponization" fund.
The fund will be placed in a Treasury account and overseen by a five‑member commission appointed by the Attorney General, with one member selected in consultation with congressional leadership. It is intended to hear and redress claims from individuals who allege they were targeted by "weaponization" and lawfare, with no partisan eligibility requirement. Claims will be processed through Dec. 15 2028, after which any remaining money reverts to the federal government. Eligibility details are unclear, but observers expect many of Trump’s allies and pardoned Jan. 6 rioters could apply.
Both the Justice Department and Trump’s legal team declined to comment on the settlement specifics.
