Iran delegation granted US visas for UN General Assembly

The United States has approved visas for a core Iranian delegation, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The decision, announced by the State Department, fulfills the U.S. obligations as the host nation under the 1947 Headquarters Agreement, despite the ongoing armed conflict between the two nations that began in February.

The Iranian delegation will be smaller than in previous years and will face strict limitations. These include travel restrictions confined to specific areas—such as the UN headquarters, the Iranian mission, the ambassador's residence, and JFK Airport—as well as prohibitions on purchasing luxury goods.

Amidst these diplomatic developments, President Donald Trump indicated that the conflict may be nearing its end, claiming that Iran has reached out directly to Washington to seek a deal. Trump also announced plans to meet with leaders or foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in New York to discuss post-war strategies for Iran. This meeting is expected to focus on a 'day after' plan that the administration aims to finalize following the U.S. midterm elections.
