Donald Trump signals potential lifting of CAATSA sanctions on Turkey

US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States may lift CAATSA sanctions against Turkey, stating that the time has come to do so. Speaking at the White House, Trump emphasized his close relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, describing him as a “friend” whom he seeks to keep happy.

The sanctions, which were implemented following Turkey’s acquisition of Russian S-400 air defense systems, remain in effect. Trump noted that officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, are currently working on the matter.

In addition to the potential removal of sanctions, Trump suggested that relations between the two nations are likely at their best ever. He also mentioned that the administration would evaluate the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, noting he would likely do something to “make him [Erdoğan] very happy.”
