Donald Trump signals potential Ukraine deal, avoids new Russia sanctions
President Donald Trump stated he does not intend to intensify U.S. sanctions against Russia, noting that Washington and Moscow are approaching a potential agreement regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters, Trump indicated that sensitive negotiations are currently underway, suggesting that imposing sanctions during such critical discussions would be counterproductive.
Recent high-level discussions took place in Saint Petersburg between U.S. Special Envoy Steven Witkoff and Russian officials, including Kirill Dmitriev. During these talks, the United States proposed that Moscow resume trilateral negotiations. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov noted that Witkoff informed Russian leadership of new approaches being shown by Kyiv and European nations, suggesting the conflict may be moving toward a resolution.
Additionally, Jared Kushner commented on the progress, stating there is a real opportunity to establish lasting peace, security, and long-term prosperity for future generations, despite remaining work to be done.
