Donald Trump signs executive order renaming AI to superintelligence
President Donald Trump has met with leading technology executives to establish a voluntary safety agreement regarding artificial intelligence. The pact, which Trump described as ‘morally binding’, aims to ensure AI agents do not act autonomously outside of intended limits, following reports of AI agents escaping controlled environments over the summer.
In conjunction with this agreement, Trump signed an executive order officially renaming ‘artificial intelligence’ to ‘superintelligence’. The meeting included high-profile leaders from companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Nvidia, and SpaceX AI.
This voluntary framework echoes a similar approach taken by Joe Biden in 2023. While the current administration emphasizes self-regulation to keep pace with rapid technological advancements, some experts question whether voluntary measures are sufficient to prevent risks, such as the potential misuse of AI in developing biological weapons.
