Donald Trump signs executive order restricting mail-in voting

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at tightening mail-in voting regulations to prevent noncitizen voting. The measure mandates the creation of a federal list of eligible voters, to be developed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Social Security Administration. Under these new rules, mail ballots may only be delivered to individuals included in this registry.

The White House stated that the SAVE America Act includes exceptions for individuals with disabilities, illnesses, military service, or those traveling. The Supreme Court recently allowed the administration to proceed with legal challenges regarding these restrictions, declining to immediately block the order for the upcoming midterm elections.

Opponents and state officials in California and Nevada have raised concerns, arguing that the federal government is overstepping authority granted to states and Congress. They also noted that the implementation timeline is insufficient for states to adjust printing and electronic communication systems with the U.S. Postal Service. While the administration cites reports of noncitizen voting, critics argue such instances are extremely rare and that the focus on the issue may be intended to sow distrust in election results.
