Trump signs executive order to establish NIH women’s health division

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order titled ‘Advancing Women’s Health to Improve Outcomes in All Phases of Life’ to expand medical research and modernize care for women. The order directs the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a new Women’s Health Division within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within 90 days. This new division will work alongside the existing Office of Research on Women’s Health but will possess a broader mandate.

Additionally, the order creates a White House Women’s Health Task Force to coordinate federal policy across various agencies. The task force will be co-led by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The initiative, which was heavily promoted by First Lady Melania Trump, is built upon five pillars: direct research funding for female-specific diseases, the use of artificial intelligence to accelerate discoveries, faster delivery of therapeutics, improving accessibility and affordability, and fostering open conversation regarding women’s health.

Priority research areas identified include endometriosis, maternal health, mental health, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and menopause. The initiative aims to bridge gaps in scientific understanding and ensure that medical breakthroughs are more efficiently translated from laboratories into clinical practice.
