Trump signs executive order to reduce housing and mortgage costs

President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Decreasing Housing Costs for the American People” aimed at lowering the expenses associated with homeownership and mortgages. The directive instructs the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to launch a pilot program that would proactively cancel mortgage insurance premiums for borrowers who meet specific equity requirements based on current property values.

The order also directs the FHFA to make a title insurance waiver pilot permanent, allowing eligible homeowners to refinance using automated property ownership checks instead of traditional title insurance to reduce closing costs. Additionally, the President directed the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Veterans Affairs to examine lowering interest rates on single-family home loans issued through their respective programs.

To address housing supply and affordability, the executive action establishes a Task Force on Manufactured Housing Innovation. This group is charged with recommending ways to modernize manufacturing methods for factory-built homes that are eligible for federal housing programs. While the order sets policy directions, the actual impact on borrowers will depend on regulatory approval, legal requirements, and implementation by federal agencies.
