Donald Trump signs Iran deal at Versailles dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron

On 18 June 2026 French President Emmanuel Macron hosted U.S. President Donald Trump for a state dinner at the Palace of Versailles, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The three‑course menu featured lobster, caviar, truffle‑infused poultry and chocolate tart, with French business leaders such as Bernard Arnault, Patrick Pouyanné and Rodolphe Saadé in attendance.

During the dinner, Trump signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran aimed at ending hostilities in the Middle East. The text, described as a “project of memorandum,” opens a 60‑day negotiation period, includes a U.S. pledge of non‑interference in Iran’s internal affairs, and hints at the possible release of frozen Iranian assets and reconstruction funding. No Iranian officials were present at the signing, and the agreement’s durability remains uncertain.

The event also included a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighting broader diplomatic activity. French opposition figures criticized the lavish dinner as overly indulgent and questioned the prudence of a high‑profile U.S.‑Iran agreement signed in such a setting.
