Donald Trump signs Russia sanctions and announces Venezuela oil deal
President Donald Trump has signed a major legislative package imposing new sanctions on Russia, targeting its energy sector and the ‘shadow fleet’ used to bypass existing restrictions. The law, named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, grants the U.S. president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the measures as a ‘powerful tool’ to pressure Russia toward peace.
In a separate foreign policy development, the Trump administration has announced a significant oil agreement with Venezuela’s transitional president, Delcy Rodríguez. The deal aims to attract $100 billion in investment and increase Venezuelan oil production by 1.5 million barrels per day to help replenish U.S. strategic reserves. While the agreement promises economic stimulation for Venezuela, critics suggest it may function as a privatization of national resources that could hinder the country's democratic stability.
