Donald Trump suggests Canada become US state amid trade war

US President Donald Trump has suggested that Canada should become a US state to save its automotive industry amidst escalating trade tensions. Speaking to WABC radio, Trump claimed Canada has ‘looted’ the US for years and characterized the nation as a difficult negotiating partner.

The dispute follows the implementation of 50% US tariffs on specific Canadian goods in August, and a subsequent announcement that the US intends to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, auto parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended trade negotiations and implemented retaliatory tariffs on American products, describing the situation as a ‘trade war’ initiated by Washington.

Tensions have been rising since 2025, with Trump criticizing the trade imbalance and alleging that Canadian government procurement markets remain closed to American companies while Canadian firms enjoy broad access to the US market.
