Donald Trump suspends 50% tariffs on Canadian imports FAST-MOVING

United States President Donald Trump has announced a three-day suspension of proposed 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports. The delay, which lasts until the end of August 21, comes as Washington and Ottawa work to finalize the details of a trade agreement.

The tariffs, which would have impacted approximately $20 billion in goods—roughly 5% of total US imports from Canada last year—were set to include products such as dairy, alcohol, furniture, clothing, plastics, and industrial equipment. Notably, the proposed measures would have applied even to goods covered under the USMCA trade agreement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the delay, noting that while substantial progress has been made in negotiations, significant work remains. Trump also suggested that a final trade agreement could potentially lead to the revival of the Keystone XL pipeline project.
