Trump targets meat industry monopoly to allow ranchers to process own food
President Donald Trump has announced plans to dismantle what he describes as a 'nasty monopoly' in the U.S. meat processing industry. He is authorizing legal measures to allow farmers and ranchers to directly process their own food, a move intended to increase competition and reduce the dominance of four major companies: Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef. These four firms currently control approximately 85% of the U.S. beef-processing market.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins indicated that further announcements are expected, including measures to expand the ability of ranchers to sell products across state lines and support for small-scale processors. This initiative follows a Department of Justice antitrust investigation into the sector that began in May.
While the administration aims to lower food costs for consumers, industry groups like the Meat Institute have raised concerns regarding food safety, warning that uninspected meat could pose risks to the public. Additionally, the move comes amid recent decisions to increase beef imports, including a 300,000-ton tariff-free allowance for lean beef trimmings.
