Donald Trump threatens EU with tariffs over Canada association proposal

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with heavy tariffs and potential trade restrictions following a proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to grant Canada 'associated member' status. Trump characterized the idea of closer EU-Canada ties as 'ridiculous' and warned that if the move is perceived as a 'hostile act,' Washington will respond with significant tariffs. He also criticized Canada, labeling it a 'terrible trading partner.'

Von der Leyen’s proposal, delivered during her annual State of the Union address, aims to deepen cooperation in sectors including trade, defense, technology, energy, critical minerals, and Arctic affairs. This push for a closer partnership follows the existing Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which has been in provisional application since 2017. While CETA has significantly boosted bilateral trade, it has yet to be fully ratified by all EU member states, including France, Italy, and Poland. The Commission now seeks to transition 'from CETA toward an Alliance for the Future' to enhance economic security and prosperity.
