Donald Trump threatens New York City federal funds over Little Italy omission
President Donald Trump has threatened to withhold billions of dollars in federal funding from New York City following the omission of Little Italy from a map identifying the city's ethnic neighborhoods. Speaking at a Columbus Day celebration in the White House East Room, Trump characterized the exclusion as an ‘unthinkable omission’ and a ‘disgrace.’
The President noted that while the map recognized communities such as Little Senegal, Little Guyana, Little Haiti, and Little Yemen, it failed to mention Little Italy. He accused city officials of ignoring the contributions of Italian Americans and suggested that the federal government might restrict financial assistance to the city unless the issue is addressed.
Trump did not specify which issuing agency produced the map or which specific federal funds would be targeted. During the event, which was attended by Italian American community leaders and members of Congress, the President positioned himself as a defender of Italian American heritage against those he claimed wish to see the community erased.
